Any small business owner will tell you that time is precious – so are your resources and money. Wise choices will help you stretch these but only if you’re willing to invest some thought and analysis in them. Thanks to the advances in technology, we are as productive as we have ever been. However, we also have to consider what our small businesses need to grow and prosper. How does one keep up? We need help, but where does it come from? From more technology, of course!

A virtual assistant (VA) is a professional that you may not ever personally meet, but is highly trained to complete a multitude of tasks, jobs or projects as if they were a physical member of your office or company staff. You communicate with your VA using different technologies and software such as, Skype, instant messenger or Zoom and file sharing such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

A VA is not a “one-size-fits-all” solution. You must do your research to find the one that works best for your business’s goals and needs and what fits your budget. However, if you’re considering hiring a VA, here are a few tips to consider before you decide:

  1. Keep a log

    1. Make a list of ALL tasks you (and your staff) perform regularly – daily, weekly, monthly, yearly.

    2. How many hours do you spend on these tasks? Quantify each of them.

  2. Assign a dollar value

    1. Determine how much your time is worth to accomplish these tasks.

  3. Analyze results

    1. Decide which tasks could be assigned to a virtual assistant to free up you and/or your staff to perform more meaningful and productive work.

Hiring a VA can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. A simple Google search will reveal a plethora of results. Further, there is an International Virtual Assistants Association that you can reference to help you locate just the right one for your needs. There are many VAs that specialize in one specific area or industry and there are some that are skilled in several disciplines. Whatever your need is, it is important to communicate to your VA what your needs are so they can help you get the job done.

The benefits of hiring a VA are many. If you’re wondering what that might look like for you and your small business, contact us today and we’ll figure it out together!
