Fact vs. Fiction: 3 Myths About Using a Virtual Assistant

Updated: May 25, 2022

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about working with a virtual assistant (VA). So much so, that many of those objections are enough to keep companies and organizations from hiring one. The fact of the matter is, the value of hiring a VA is different for every situation. It is important that you take the time to determine under what circumstances you should work with a VA. Here are three myths that should never keep you from working with one.

#1 – VAs Only Do Administrative Work

There will be a lot of things a skilled virtual assistant is great at and administrative work might be one of them. If you’re looking to fill an administrative role on your team and you can’t find the right person locally, then a virtual assistant might be the right fit for you. However, administrative tasks are not the only area where VAs are skilled. There are many technical and creative roles that VAs specialize in and some are even the best in their field. The best part of working with a VA is because they are not like traditional employees, you get to decide together how frequently you will work together – whether it will be short-term or long-term.

#2 – VAs Won’t Need Training

No matter how good they are, your VA isn’t a mind reader. You wouldn’t hire a new in-house project manager and not give them an orientation, would you? You’d probably walk them through the office, introduce them to the team, show them where the files are kept, how to keep their calendar and instruct them on key company policies. Your VA should receive the same courtesy – only virtually.

A great thing about today’s technology is that it keeps getting better every day. We’re able to communicate through video chat face-to-face and not lose the visual cues we lose when only communicating verbally or through written word. Don’t always rely on your VA to help in their own onboarding. Take the initiative and really help them feel welcome and part of your team.

#3 – VAs Are a Security Risk

One thing I think we could all agree on is that our personal data is our most valued aspect of our identity. When it comes to your business, breaches in confidentiality of digital files, intellectual property, company data and contracts can be of great concern. Advances in technology allow for digital paper trails make audits and tracing easier. Another added level of security is use of non-disclosure agreements, which any good VA is willing to sign.

As I’ve said before, adding a virtual assistant to your team is an exciting yet intimidating decision for some. As your organization works toward achieving its goals and objectives, it will be important as ever to use good communication, promote teamwork and lead with confidence. Embrace your team, create an environment of trust and be ready to give and listen to feedback along the way. You are well on your way to creating value in your business. Enjoy the ride together with your VA!
